CARNIVAL MASK-MAKING EXPERIENCE/ 3 hours
A Hands-On Adventure in Venetian Crafts
The Venetian tradition of wearing masks goes back centuries. During the time of plagues, curious masks with long snoots stuffed with cotton wool were believed to filter the air and thus protect the bearer from the awful disease. Later, the Venetians took to wearing the mask to obscure identity during Carnival thus allowing every sort of transgression or indiscretion to be committed ... anonymously. Today the papier mache' mask is one of the most typical art forms of Venice and a symbol of the city.
On this delightful adventure - suitable for the whole family - you will be met at your hotel by our representative and accompanied through the alleys of neighborhood Venice to an authentic laboratorio where masks are still made by hand in the original fashion. Each participant will have the opportunity to select their own favorite style of mask from antique models of Carnival masks, from those used in Venetian daily life or even those of the theater of the Commedia dell'Arte. An expert on the subject will present an entertaining theoretical explanation which allows everyone to understand the meaning of each mask - making the choice itself that much more gratifying. Then it's on to the decoration - each participant may choose from seven different techniques: two coloring methods which are typical of traditional masks or, for those wishing to freely express their creativity, five finishing techniques will be demonstrated and each individual can then choose to complete their mask "free-style" by combining the various options.
Of course, the finished product is the best souvenir imaginable and is yours to keep!
Departure from your hotel.
